Counterbalanced Construction Technique
We aim to create a rattan chair that embodies elegance, durability, and breaks away from the traditional rattan chair design. Leveraging the characteristic rebound of steam-bent rattan, we have developed a construction method called the "counterbalanced construction." This technique involves bending two rattan poles in opposite directions and locking them together, allowing the inherent resilience of bent rattan poles to counterbalance and support each other. With this approach, we achieve a sleek and minimalistic design while ensuring a remarkably sturdy structure for rattan furniture.
Material Characteristics & Captivating Aesthetics
Rattan is a material with distinctive characteristics, known for its strength, resilience, and flexibility. Each individual pole can be easily shaped, while multiple poles together provide structural integrity. Traditionally, craftsmen would interlock several rattan poles to form a sturdy framework. However, by employing the "counterbalanced construction" technique and the three-dimensional bending method, we have achieved the remarkable feat of shaping the chair back and legs using only two rattan poles. This innovative approach has resulted in a sleek and minimalist design, giving birth to the elegant Ghyll chair.
One-Of-A-Kind
There are over 1,200 species of rattan in the world. The Ghyll chair utilizes Grade AB Tohiti rattan, which features sturdy and evenly-sized poles, beautiful coloration, strong texture, and excellent durability. However, even with such high-quality rattan, each pole varies slightly in thickness, color, and hardness. Moreover, the Ghyll chair is meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans, making each chair truly unique and one-of-a-kind.
